SOVA .... SOUTHERN ONTARIO VISUAL ARTISTS

Welcome to our website. All of us are visual artists, and have become friends throughout the years, connecting at first by meeting in other art groups , or in shows. We like and respect each other's work, and wanted more opportunities to exhibit our work. The realities of wanting to exhibit more, is the cost of renting space, or having to complete a large body of your own work, enough to fill an exhibition gallery. These impediments throw roadblocks in our wanting to share our work with the public. 

To climb over these impediments, we have come together, to share our art... to exhibit together... to share the workload and costs incurred with doing an exhibition... and most importantly...to enjoy the camaraderie of being with other artists.

Because we are all extremely busy, working artists, we each have choices of which exhibitions we wish to be included in. When we are not in SOVA exhibits, we are involved in exhibitions with other groups, such as the Colour and Form Society, or some of the members in the Ontario Society of Artists, or band together with other artists for special exhibitions.

Some members have been involved in several shows in the USA, or other provinces. Some of us have been selected by the McMichael Art Gallery and exhibited there. All of us have been involved in galleries.

All of us have won awards in juried exhibitions.

The bottom line, or goal, is to expose our artwork to the public, where they will hopefully appreciate our art and enjoy it.

SOVA is an exhibition group of Visual Artists. Our very first show as a formal group was September 2014 , and we were part of the Festival at Visual Arts Mississauga. In the photo , you see from left to right, Helen Duplassie, Jeff Williams,Charlene Nickels, Robert Chisholm, and Lynden Cowan.

All of us had been friends for a number of years, so it really was a natural progression to show our work together.

In 2015 several members of SOVA exhibited in the Twist Gallery. We enjoyed the opening reception and being able to display our work there.

SOVA artists Steve Wilson, and Margaret Pardy exhibited at The Arts Project in London, Ontario in October 2015 , to assist with the anti bullying campaign. Also in the photo is Kelly McNeil, a popular wildlife artist, "high fiving" Jeremy Grace.

SOVA members also become involved in out of the ordinary art projects. For the Pan Am games held in 2015, several of us were involved in "painting horses", which were then exhibited throughout the Headwaters area and eventually sold. Here you see the main set up at Windsong Equestrian Centre, as the artists work on their projects. Robert Chisholm can be seen in the green shirt.

Many of the SOVA members have their studios at the Alton Mill Arts Centre, 1402 Queen Street West, Alton On.

Always lots to see and experience there. Open daily from 10 till 5 pm, but closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, unless there are special events going on.

In 2015 SOVA held an exhibition of their work in the Fall's Gallery which is located on the second floor of the Alton Mill Arts Centre.

There is a lot of extra work involved when getting an exhibition ready. Janette Williams and Steve Wilson are preparing and sorting out the labels for the artworks.

The Alton Mill Arts Centre was originally built in the 1880's, and has been designated a Heritage Building. As such, the walls are preserved and this really adds to the atmosphere of this wonderful building.

In October 2015 Lynden Cowan and Lynn Schumacher were selected and exhibited at the McMichael Gallery in Kleinberg. It was a first year for Lynden , but for Lynn... it was year number eight  !

One of the students that Lynden had taught years ago came to surprise her at the McMichael exhibit. The previous student is holding a photo taken of her during an exhibit, when the student was a little girl. A nice surprise!

2015 was year number eight for Lynn Schumacher at the McMichael Gallery. 

Lynn Schumacher was also an exhibitor at "The Artist Project", a very special,prestigious  show held in Toronto.

Congratulations Margaret. Margaret will be demonstrating how she accomplishes her spectacular scratchboard pieces at the exhibit in Carabram Canada Pavilion Friday, July 8th from 6 to 10 pm on 23 Regan Road in the Unifor building. (Exhibit July 8, 9 and 10/ 16.) If you miss this chance to visit with Margaret you can see her in her studio at the Alton Mill Arts Centre.

Steve Wilson's " Catching Pokemon Go" received honourable mention at the VAM 39 annual juried show at the Art Gallery of Mississauga. Out of 201 entries only 38 were accepted for this prestigious annual exhibition and five awards were handed out. Steve is on the far right with judges Sally Mckay, Todd Tremeer, and Michael Vickers. Wonderful recognition :)

SOVA participated formally for the first time as a group exhibiting their artwork in September 2014, at a festival on the beautiful grounds of Visual Arts Mississauga. Within one year we had exhibited as a group at: Neilsen Park, The Twist Gallery, The Falls Gallery, and Brampton City Hall.

Members of SOVA were involved in an exhibition at the Columbus Centre . Artwork was well received, and several pieces sold.

Lynne Schumacher was the Featured Artist at the Westmount Gallery August 6 to 27th/16. This was quite an honour for Lynne because the Westmount Gallery is celebrating its 40th Anniversary. 

The Headwaters Art Gallery at the Alton Mill Arts Centre presents "The Best of SOVA " exhibition.featuring Southern Ontario Visual Artists Robert Chisholm, Lynden Cowan, Helen Duplassie, Charlene Nickels,Margaret Pardy, and Steve Wilson. This show extends from Wednesday Aug 17th to Sunday September 11, with a Meet the Artist reception on Sunday August 21st from 1 to 4pm. 

The Southern Ontario Visual Artists ( SOVA ) is an eclectic blend of award winning artists .

Artist Steve Wilson was selected as one of the exhibitors for the Country Heritage Park one day event Sunday August 21,2016.

Three of the SOVA artists entered this prestigious juried show and were selected to participate. Lynne Schumacher, Steve Wilson and Margaret Pardy are included in this art exhibition.

Southern Ontario Visual Artist Margaret Pardy was selected for the prestigious Autumn Art show at the internationally well known McMichael Art Gallery. On this photo of the brochure you can see her beautiful scratchboard artwork.

SOVA artist Paulette Murphy is one of the exhibitors in this special art exhibition titled "The Clothing Project", held at the Red Door Gallery. Paulette does unique Fibre Artwork that engages different materials.

Lynne Schumacher is a well known SOVA artist and was also selected to the 2016 McMichael Art Gallery Autumn Art sale. Lynne has been selected several years in a row, for her distinctive style .

Artist Janice Ykema was in honoured to be in a group show in Turkey.

The Guardian in Brampton did an article on November 27th, 2015 of Artist Margaret Pardy, regarding the "Out of the Black " Scratchboard show at Beaux-Arts Brampton.

All of the SOVA artists are engaged with many different exhibitions each year. Robert enjoys the Fenelon Falls outdoors show.

Robert at the OAG Fall Harvest of Colour 2015 being acknowledged for his painting Homestead that won Honourable Mention.

This strong, impressionistic artwork is a view from outside  Studio 202 in the Alton Mill Arts Centre. A wonderful acrylic which draws the viewer in, this piece was juried in to the Colour and Form Society show in July /16 held at the PaperMill Gallery, Todmorden.

I have always been fascinated by the intricate, detailed beauty of swamps. Most people , do not take the time to actually stop and admire the life cycle found in the wetlands. This particular scene is located on the 15th sideroad, north of Palgrave ,Ontario.

 The Rattling Brook Falls is a beautiful  waterfall located in Newfoundland, not far from St. John's.

Gage Park is located in downtown Brampton, Ontario. Always a popular destination, both in winter and warmer seasons.

Always fun to do in the fall, is to play in the fallen leaves. The children here are jumping in the freshly made piles at Gage Park, Brampton. This is how the park appeared before the circular rink for ice skating was was built.

A small woodland stream that is a very familiar setting in Canada.

Mr. McGregor's House was popular for years as an ice cream parlour in Kleinberg, Ontario. It has now been repurposed , but the ambience that was there for years remains etched in our memory.

This small 10" by 12" oil on canvas painting is a scene from Algonquin Park, Canada. 

Very large painting owned by the City of Brampton to remember Ken Whillans who drowned while on vacation.

This beautiful scene , titled "Mackeral Sky", is from Beach Meadows, Nova Scotia. Mackeral clouds are called such because of the "ribbing" effect.

 Johnny Bower passed away on Boxing Day, 2017 . I always thought of him as a very personable, sweet man. In 2005, I was selected to create a painting for Peel Regional Police to be presented to Johnny as he was their Honorary Police Chief. They had certain key elements they wanted in the painting, and the family sent private photos so they could surprise him at a banquet. I painted the background as a feeling of ice to tie all the elements together. Johnny, you will be missed.

Gully was selected for the prestigious Visual Arts Mississauga 41st Annual Juried show .

Miners Bay is a painting of a scene located about ten km south of Minden, Ontario.

The Sunbathers is a small painting of two friends enjoying the afternoon sunshine in the Caledon area.

Sand Dunes of Lakeside

A Walk in the Park is an alcohol ink and mixed media artwork.

This beautiful scratchboard work of art received Honourable Mention at the 9th Annual Open Juried Show at Beaux Arts Brampton, April 2016. 

Margaret was honoured to be juried into the Manhatten Artist Exhibition called Her Story. This  Online Exhibition to Promote Outstanding Women Artists runs from April 27th - June 27th,2017 consisting of 63 artists selected from a field of over 1000 art pieces, and it was "Three's Company" that the jurors selected.

'Protecting the Nest' was accepted into The art of the Animal Kingdom juried show in Bennington Vermont, in 2014. Margaret felt very  honoured to be a part of this prestigious show.

 "How you doin" made it onto the finalist list of the Artist Magazine Competition. There was over 7,000 entries in total so making the finalist list is an accomplishment in itself. He will be listed in the December issue of The Artists Magazine in 2016 along with the artist's name.

This beautiful  Scratchboard titled "How you Doin?" has won Honourable Mention for a second time in a row with an additional Online International Juried Show. This time it is with Light Space and Time's Online Gallery, 7th Annual International "Animal" Art Exhibition show.

The gallery received 674  entries from 20 different countries from around the world, including Argentina, Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Malaysia, Morocco, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.  In addition, the gallery received entries from 35 different states. 

"The Hunt" was accepted into the International Scratchboard Society Association Juried exhibition in Carey, North Carolina, in 2014. Quite an accomplishment!
